Battery Free Cellphone!!! is it for real?

In this modern age where mobile phone usage is rampant most of us would have faced the situation of having our phone die while in the middle of an important call or not being able to recharge the battery because of non availability of charger.

A battery-free cellphone might just be the solution

Scientists have come up with a prototype of phone which does not require a battery. This could be an important breakthrough in the world of mobile phones and chargers.

Battery free Cell Phone

“We have built what we believe is the first functioning cell phone that consumes almost zero power,” said Shyam Gollakota, associate professor at the University of Washington (UW) in the US.
Researchers eliminated a power-hungry step in most modern cellular transmissions - converting analogue signals that convey sound into digital data that a phone can understand. Instead, the battery-free cell phone takes advantage of tiny vibrations in a phone’s microphone or speaker that occur when a person is talking into a phone or listening to a call.

The battery-free cellphone does still require a small amount of energy to perform some operations. The prototype has a power budget of 3.5 micro-watts.
Researchers demonstrated how to harvest this small amount of energy from two different sources. The battery-free phone prototype can operate on power gathered from ambient radio signals transmitted by a base station

Although it would be great to have a battery-free cellphone and not worry about charger cables and dying phones, Researchers admit that the prototype will not replace smartphones anytime soon. The current prototype only has basic functions, in which it can only be used for talking and listening

Now they're working to turn their low-power cell phone into a low-power smart phone by getting it to stream video with a display using E ink screens. (E ink is commonly used in e-readers for a paper-like display.)
