If you know anything about cameras you might have
heard of RED at some point. RED is a company that makes some of best-rated video
cameras and sensors.
Basically, if you’re looking for best, highest
resolution sensor around for whatever project you’re working on and you want
modularity (perhaps literally), you might be able to pick up something like the
award winning RED HELIUM 8K S35 WEAPON Brain that can record 8K videos at 60
frames per second, which is a overkill as we do not have any display supporting
the 8K though.
RED is known for making top notch professional
hardware used even in movies. The company has never made an affordable product
so far. Now we’re finally getting our first hands-on look at RED’s Hydrogen One
thanks to Marques Brownlee(MKBHD).
As expected, the Hydrogen One is unique. Brownlee
had opportunity to gets his hands on three separate prototypes during his time
with RED, including a fit and finish model without a working display, a model
that didn’t look like the final product but did feature a working holographic
display, and a second fit and finish model that had a modular attachment
similar to Moto Mods.
For those unaware, RED has been teasing the RED
Hydrogen One for a while now. The Hydrogen One is a dual-camera smartphone with
RED claiming an allegedly ground-breaking 3D holographic display, but hold on
RED makes nothing affordable. The device is said to be coming in two variants,
an aluminium-bodied one for $1,195 and a titanium-bodied one for $1,595.
The holographic display is a 5.7-inch unit that RED
claims can give you a glassless 3D experience and even let you “look around”
objects in a scene. This is certainly not the first time we’ve heard of “revolutionary”
3D technology as Nintendo has been doing it for years. However we expect RED to
come with some revolutionary and jaw dropping technology to justify its price
because RED usually delivers top notch hardware and experience.
YouTuber MKBHD was invited to RED’s HQ and had the
opportunity to try the holographic display for himself. He also managed to get
hands-on time with a non-functioning prototype of the unit about which he made
a video about it.
As MKBHD points out in the video, the device is
quite large and thick, but seems well-protected and easy to grip. The edges are
contoured to allow for better grip and you even find Kevlar on the back surface.
A power button is placed on the right side of the
device and it doubles as a fingerprint reader. Towards the bottom on the same
side you’ll find a dedicated button for the camera. Volume buttons are on the
left. Connectivity happens via USB-C, which is at the bottom, residing
alongside a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
The back of the phone also features several contact
points at the bottom. These will be used to attach various modules to the
phone.
The speakers seem to be front-firing.
The details of the camera system are unknown, but
RED believes that the final product will rival every other camera in the market that isn’t a RED product.
